About Us

KHALIMA is a social enterprise dedicated to helping and improving the lives of impoverished women in Western Mongolia. All products are handcrafted by local wives and mothers who specialze in the art of traditional Kazakh crafts, and all proceeds go back to the very same women who made them. KHALIMA focuses on increasing the income level of four women who live on their ability to make Kazakh crafts.

THE STORY

A widow and a mother of five, Khalima lives in the outskirts of Bayan-Ulgii, Mongolia. When her husband died in 2004, Khalima was forced to become the provider, and began making and selling Kazakh crafts for income. She dedicates the around 200 tugrugs ($101 in US currency) she earns every month towards feeding her family and ensuring that her children receive an education.

Khalima is the inspiration for KHALIMA. She is just one of many women in the Kazakh provice of Mongolia who struggle everyday to make ends meet. Our goal is to change stories like hers and empower women.
